Defending Liberty: The Issues

The “3 R’s” of Recovery

RECLAIM LIBERTY
RESTORE FREEDOM
REBUILD AMERICA

Issue-Header-Jobs-and-Economy

Eliminate bureaucratic regulations which strangle our job creators and reduce the tax burden on businesses and family farms.

Learn More

While there are painfully few people in Congress who have ever created a job, I’ve spent my entire career creating family-supporting jobs. Our country is losing its manufacturing base and has adopted policies that stifle economic growth and job creation. More government spending and higher taxes are not the answer. By getting government out of the way, the American free enterprise system can do what it does best: generate more jobs than any other system in the history of the world.

We should eliminate bureaucratic regulations which strangle our job creators and reduce the tax burden on businesses and family farms.

Roll Back Regulations by:

  • Requiring an economic impact study of all current and newly proposed federal regulations followed by annual reviews
  • Sunsetting of all federal regulations unless specifically sustained by an up or down vote of Congress

Issue-Header-Debt

We need to address our massive spending and debt.

Learn More

Addressing our massive spending and debt needs to be our top priority.

America’s debt represents a profound generational theft. Out of control spending in Washington, by both parties, has left a legacy of debt to our children and grandchildren that is both irresponsible and immoral. Rather than make the tough choices necessary to preserve America’s financial stability, the career politicians have voted, time and again, to increase the debt ceiling and pass the buck to future generations, making the problem worse in the process. In business, I learned that debt must be dealt with through careful planning, budgeting, and disciplined execution.

Stop Reckless Spending and Debt by:

  • Cutting one cent of every dollar from all federal spending each year for six straight years to balance the budget
  • Establishing a maximum cap on federal spending of 18% of GDP
  • Passing a Constitutional amendment that requires a balanced federal budget
  • Permanently banning earmarks and pork barrel spending
  • Establishing a requirement to stop paying the salaries of Members of Congress unless they pass a budget

Issue-Header-Taxes

There should be no attempt to raise taxes on the American people.

Learn More

Politicians in Washington spend taxpayer’s money with no accountability. I know, as our Founders did, that the money in the government’s coffers does not belong to the politicians. It originated from and belongs to the American people. And the best thing our government can do for the economy is to let the American people keep more of their own money to save, spend, and invest as they see fit. Our citizens need tax relief and tax certainty. A reform to the US tax code to produce a smaller, flatter tax rate for everyone is needed.

Issue-Header-Earmarks

I support the complete and permanent elimination of the corrupt practice of earmarks.

Learn More

Part of the spending discipline needed in Washington is an elimination of earmarks. Under the cover of darkness, politicians of both parties have squandered away our tax dollars on some of the most ridiculous and wasteful special interest projects imaginable. Lobster Institutes, Iowa Rain Forests, Bridges to Nowhere, and thousands of other wasteful projects representing tens of billions of dollars of our hard-earned money on things the American people never asked for nor wanted. A project that can’t stand on its own merits ought not be funded.

Issue-Header-Healthcare

ObamaCare is a fundamentally flawed law that must be repealed.

Learn More

ObamaCare is a fundamentally flawed law that must be repealed. In repeal of ObamaCare, we must replace it with sensible, conservative, market-based solutions that will make health care more accessible and affordable by implementing comprehensive medical malpractice tort reform, making insurance purchasable across state lines, broadening availability of health savings accounts, and allowing individuals to control their own insurance policies by making them portable thereby alleviating pre-existing condition considerations when someone changes jobs.

Issue-Header-Defense

The defense of our liberty and preservation of our freedoms by our Armed Forces is the single most important function of the federal government.

Learn More

I was proud to serve our nation as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, where I pledged to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic. When the decision to engage our Armed Forces is made by the U.S. Congress, it should only be done with a clear mission and a clear definition of victory. All our volunteer fighting force deserves the finest equipment, technology, training, and medical care, and we should always give our brave men and women all the resources they need.

Issue-Header-Agriculture

Protect agriculture and re-inject commonsense into agriculture policy.

Learn More

We need to be an advocate for production agriculture and re-inject commonsense into agriculture policy.

Missouri is blessed to have a thriving and diverse agriculture industry. Each year, Missouri’s agricultural output contributes over $12 billion to our state economy — representing about 7% of our annual gross state product. I understand that Missouri’s farmers and ranchers are the cornerstone of our state’s economy. Unfortunately, some leaders in Washington simply do not get it. The Obama administration and its supporters in Congress have threatened or imposed burdensome agriculture regulations on everything from farm dust, to spilled milk. To make matters worse, these senseless and oppressive federal regulations are stifling job growth in agriculture. As someone who ran a business and created jobs, I understand how regulation, or the threat of regulation, can directly impact the bottom line. In this uncertain and onerous regulatory environment, Missouri farmers and ranchers cannot grow their operations and the cost of production is skyrocketing.

Issue-Header-Life

I am 100% pro-life and believe that life is providentially determined; to be cherished, valued, respected, and defended.

Learn More

It was a blessed moment in my life when I first held in my arms each of my three wonderful children. And now, years later, I’ve experienced a similar moment with each of my beautiful grandchildren. Nothing is more precious than human life. Our founders declared that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights among which are, “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. And likewise, I am committed to those very same principles.

Issue-Header-Constitution

I support a strict constructionist interpretation of our Constitution.

Learn More

Much of what has gone wrong in recent years can be laid to a fundamental disagreement about the proper role of government as outlined in Constitution. I believe our Founders left us the best framework for self-government in human history. We need to support judicial nominees who will interpret law as it is written, not as they want it to be, and we should oppose any judicial nominees who will attempt to use their position to legislate a liberal agenda.

Issue-Header-Second-Amendment

As a Marine, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and a gun owner, I understand how important it is to defend our Second Amendment right to bear arms and I am against legislation that would restrict or infringe upon that right.

Learn More

Brunner-Second-Amendment
As a Marine, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and a gun owner, I defend our Second Amendment right to bear arms and support any vote against legislation that would restrict or infringe upon that right.

Issue-Header-Immigration

I support providing our men and women at the border with all the resources necessary to secure the border and stop the flow of illegal immigrants, and opposing any forms of amnesty that reward people for breaking the law.

Learn More

I support providing our men and women at the border with all the resources necessary to secure the border and stop the flow of illegal immigrants, and opposing any forms of amnesty that reward people for breaking the law.

The American Dream has long inspired people from every corner of the globe to seek the unique and bountiful opportunities offered in our great nation. I fully support legal immigration. Immigrants who want to work hard, obey our laws, and live the American Dream have always been a great asset. For those who have abused America’s openness, however, strong and immediate action must be taken. I also support the right of states to pass legislation they deem appropriate to enforce immigration laws where the federal government has failed. I oppose any effort to grant amnesty to those illegal immigrants that have broken the law. At the same time, our legal immigrants should be protected by streamlining the application process.

Issue-Header-Term-Limits

Learn More

Our Founders envisioned a nation where people from various walks of life would come to serve for a time, provide their service to their country, and then go home and return to private life. Unfortunately, over the years, a class of career politicians has emerged that has placed their own political preservation ahead of the interests of the nation they are supposed to serve. This has had a corrosive influence on our government that has led to the practice of pork-barrel spending and unwillingness to make tough decisions. I support term limits for the US Congress because I believe it is the only way to rid our government of career politicians once and for all and return our government to the people to whom it belongs.
